The Museum Association, in collaboration with heritage institutions from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, has launched a pilot program for the exchange of museum expertise. The aim is to strengthen engagement, deepen networks, and increase understanding of each other’s contexts. Professionals will temporarily work within each other’s organizations to share practical experience.

The programme will run until December 2027. The Mondriaan Fund is funding this pilot, in line with its policy to strengthen the cultural infrastructure across the regions of the Kingdom. In partnership with the Museum Association, which is responsible for implementation, the project aims to ensure a sustainable, long-term continuation beyond the pilot phase.

As part of the pilot we will start off with a regional knowledge exchange. We will work in three thematic areas based on a prior assembled working group made out of heritage professionals within Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St Eustatius and St Maarten. This will be one of the four stages of the pilot.

Themes

The three themes are:

  • Sustainable Funding and Economic Models
  • Strategic Planning & lobby
  • Cultural and Community Engagement & Visitor Experience

Terms and conditions

To participate in the groups the following terms and conditions are composed:

  • Is a museum, as defined by the working group *
  • Represents one of the six islands
  • Is available for two online meetings of two hours each in May (May 20 or 21, and May 27 or 28 at 9 AM or 11 AM).
  • Is available for a physical working visit in June (7 days in total, during the week of June 15 or June 22).
  • The group exist a minimum of three islands
  • When one island is represented by more than one museum. This could be a reason for rejection or at least for the physical working visits.
  • The participant will receive flight, accommodation and daily allowance for the working visits.
  • The participant will host the working group in their museum with their practice. Any cost made as for drinks or technical support (beamer, sound system) will be financed by the museum association with a maximum of 500 dollars.

The structure of the thematic groups will be based on sharing experiences and knowledge within the islands. But also to have best practices within the themes.

For the physical working visit

The participant will host a best practice session based on the theme with the objective to share the knowledge with the other participants. The other participants will also share their experiences and knowledge.

At the end of the working visits the participants will decide what the main question is that they would like to ask to a Dutch museum. They will also decide which participant/museum will be representative for this theme to do an exchange with the Dutch museum regarding this question. The Caribbean representative will have the obligation to share the knowledge that has been shared during the exchange with his fellow participants.

Open Call: Regionale kennisuitwisseling musea
